A Christian charity with a mission to heal the sick, comfort the sorrowing and give faith to the faithless.

At present we are working with churches and other charities to create gardens where people can enjoy the mental health benefits of being and working in a garden, with the possibility of receiving pastoral support.

Our history...

Burrswood has its origins in the life of a remarkable women called Dorothy Kerin, whom many regard as a Christian mystic. After a prolonged period of sickness which attacked her at the age of 17, she was rendered bedbound and came close to death. She was supported during this time by both her doctor and her Christian minister. When she was 22 (in 1912) she miraculously recovered and was restored to full health. Her healing earned her national attention and the experience brought to birth within her the concept (now widely debated in the medical world) of ‘whole person care’.

After her recovery, Dorothy Kerin spoke of a vision in which she believed Jesus Christ was calling her to establish a place where others could receive love and healing through the combined ministrations of medicine (which she regarded as a gift of God) and faith. Under Dorothy Kerin’s inspiration, Burrswood Christian Hospital was established in 1948.

70 years after its establishment, ‘Burrswood Health and Wellbeing’ was started, it has now moved into the community, with a renewed commitment to promote afresh Dorothy Kerin’s commission and pioneering vision of whole person care and reinterpret them for today’s world.

The Dorothy Kerin Trust is now a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Many visitors to Burrswood spoke of the wonderful gardens and the benefits of having them to enjoy. Just as healing services were pioneered by Dorothy Kerin, and now are benefitting people throughout the world, so the Trustees are now seeking to pioneer health and well being through God’s creation of the natural environment in a communities in Kent and East Sussex.
